In late 1970, Jim married his first wife, Mary Camille Skora (also known as “Camille”). In 1976, the two began hosting the morning show on WTOP radio in Washington, D.C. They left the Washington area in 1980 to work mornings at WCFL in Chicago. The pair, however, eventually divorced. His former wife, Camille Bohannon, became a well-known broadcaster in her own right, working for the Associated Press and United Press International for many years.

They reconnected thirty-three years later during a book signing in Columbia, Missouri, and married on August 21, 1998.
