Margera began playing in various bands in 1991, including ‘Soalroach,’ which included his brother Bam and friend Ryan Dunn. He later formed a band named ‘Foreign Objects’ with his friend Deron Miller who would eventually become the lead guitarist and vocalist of ‘Camp Kill Yourself’. Deron Miller wrote all of the songs on the band’s first EP, ‘The Undiscovered Numbers & Colors,’ which was released in 1995. Later, the duo collaborated with Chad I Ginsburg (a guitarist and vocalist) and decided to rename the band ‘Camp Kill Yourself’ (Aka CKY). Jess was the band’s drummer and also wrote songs for one of its albums, ‘Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild,’ released in 2002.

Jess also became a member of the comedy band ‘Gnarkill,’ which included his brother Bam on keyboards, Rich Vose on guitar, and Brandon DiCamillo on vocals. It put out two studio albums, ‘Gnarkill’ in 2002 and ‘GnarKill vs. Unkle Matt and the ShitBirdz’ in 2006. While ‘Camp Kill Yourself’ was still going strong, Jess became involved with other bands and collaborated on a number of recording projects. In 2007, he appeared on two studio recordings by ‘Viking Skull,’ Chapter Two and Blackened Sunrise. He also performed for the band later in its two other recordings ‘Doom, Gloom, Heartache & Whiskey’ and ‘Cursed By the Sword’. Margera formed ‘The Company Band,’ a supergroup with ‘Fireball Ministry’ frontman James Rota and Clutch frontman Neil Fallon, in 2007.

The band became official after the addition of Dave Bone and bassist Jason Diamond, and released their debut EP ‘Sign Here, Here, and Here’ in 2007. The band also released two more EPs, ‘The Company Band’ in 2009 and ‘Pros & Cons’ in 2012. After the release of ‘Camp Kill Yourself’s fourth studio album, ‘Carver City,’ in 2009, the band encountered some difficulties, and each member became concerned about the band’s future. While the other members were eager to make more recordings, guitarist Ginsburg was more interested in releasing solo material. Ginsburg left the band for personal reasons shortly after, but later returned. The band’s most recent album, titled ‘The Phoenix,’ was released in 2017.
