His first television appearance was as Eric in the MTV series Undressed. Other television appearances include Law & Order: True Crime, Angel, and Malcolm in the Middle. On Crossing Jordan, he played Brian “the A.V. guy” for the first time. He has appeared in a number of films, including the science fiction thriller Donnie Darko and the cheerleader comedy Bring It On Again. He had an appearance in the web series Hungry Girl. From 2004 until 2007, Trainor appeared as “Crazy” Steve, a movie theatre employee, on Drake & Josh. From 2007 until 2012, he starred on iCarly as Spencer Shay, Miranda Cosgrove’s titular character’s elder brother, and guardian (he and Cosgrove had previously performed together).
Trainor was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Programme for his role as Dudley Puppy in the animated sitcom T.U.F.F. Puppy. Trainor starred as the Draenei shaman Goggins in the World of Warcraft video series Project Lore. After quitting the series in February 2009, he was replaced by Jeff Cannata. He also co-starred in the Nickelodeon TV movie Best Player with iCarly co-star Jennette McCurdy, playing Quincy Johnson, a video-game fanatic whose major competitor in a video-gaming contest is McCurdy’s character. Trainor appeared as Vinnie, the uncle, and guardian of Buddy Handleson’s character Wendell, in the short-lived series Wendell & Vinnie in 2013.
For both seasons of the Halo in-universe podcast Hunt the Truth, he portrayed Commander Michael Sullivan. Trainor had a recurring role as Commander Cone on Bunsen Is a Beast in 2017. Trainor and Mike O’Gorman have been starring in the YouTube comedy Web series The Porch since 2018. Trainor appeared in the 2018 film Cover Versions, which was written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Todd Berger. The film premiered at the 2018 Palm Springs Film Festival and was picked up by Sony Pictures for distribution. Parts of the film were shot on location at the KAABOO Del Mar music festival (in northern San Diego County’s coastal region). Trainor’s performance was praised for being cutting-edge and thought-provoking.
The revival of iCarly was announced in March 2021. Trainor reprised his role as Spencer Shay in the series, which debuted on Paramount+ in June of that year. Trainor created the band Nice Enough People in October 2015 with guitarist-vocalist Mike O’Gorman, drummer Andrew Zuber, and guitarist Allison Scagliotti, who also happened to be Trainor’s co-star in Drake & Josh as the character Mindy Crenshaw. Trainor is the group’s bassist. On June 22, 2016, the band released its first EP, Hanover Hideaway.
