York worked for Pierre Cossette Productions as a talent coordinator, contributing to events such as the Grammy Awards and the American Music Awards. York began working at Good Morning America after graduating from UCLA in 1984, where she was later employed and promoted to the Field and Series section. York moved back to Los Angeles in 1987 and rapidly became an aerial reporter for KFWB, becoming just the second female traffic reporter to fly in a helicopter (the first was Kelly Lange, who worked for KABC Radio). She joined KTLA Morning News in 1991 as an aerial traffic reporter, quickly becoming a household figure in Southern California.

York has received multiple honors for her work, including an Emmy in 1993 for her coverage of the Malibu fires, as well as two more the following year for her coverage of the Northridge earthquake and her morning news updates. She also won three Golden Mike Awards in 1998, 1999, and 2003, as well as another Emmy in 2003. York has been on Larry King Live, Entertainment Tonight, and The Leeza Show, as well as in films such as That Thing You Do!, Bandits, and Hollywood Homicide. York is also an electric and acoustic bassist, and she was the creator of the all-female Christian rock band Rachel Rachel.

The now-defunct trio released two CDs and appeared at various festivals, including the Long Beach Jazz Festival, the Pasadena Playboy Jazz Festival, and the Montreal Drum Festival.
