Jeffrey Donovan Biography

Jeffrey Donovan is an actor from the United States.  He made his Broadway debut in ‘An Inspector Calls in 1994. He made his film debut as Pete Gulley in ‘Throwing Down’ in 1995. In the same year, he made his television debut on ‘Homicide: Life on the Street,’ a police procedural show.

He went on to receive his Master of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program.

Donovan has appeared in episodes of CSI: Miami, Spin City, Monk, Millennium, Witchblade, The Pretender, Homicide: Life on the Street, and Law & Order. Donovan portrayed the antihero Dr. Sloan in the short-lived TV series Threshold. Donovan also had a recurring role in Crossing Jordan as William Ivers. On the USA Network in 2004, he had his first leading role in the American remake of the British television series Touching Evil, alongside Vera Farmiga. From 2007 to 2013, Donovan starred in Burn Notice as Michael Westen, a spy who was burned for reasons unknown to him by the CIA or Homeland Security and left stranded in Miami, Florida.

Donovan also directed a prequel film, Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe, starring co-star Bruce Campbell, which premiered on USA Network on April 17, 2011. The seven-season series received positive reviews from both fans and critics, and it was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards. Donovan appeared as North Dakota mobster Dodd Gerhardt on Fargo in 2015. In 2016, he debuted as Tarot-reading con artist Charlie Haverford in Hulu’s Shut Eye. Shut Eye was canceled after two seasons on January 30, 2018. In the 21st season of Law & Order, he was cast as a series regular detective.

Donovan has also appeared on stage in Hamlet as the title character, in A View from the Bridge as Marco, in An Inspector Calls, and Off-Broadway in Things You Shouldn’t Say Past Midnight as Gene, The Glory of Living as Clint, Toys in the Attic as Julian Berniers, On the Waterfront as Terry Malloy, Oedipus as Teiresias, and Freedomland (play) as Seth. He appeared in the farce Don’t Dress for Dinner in Chicago from October 2008 to spring 2009. Donovan has also appeared as Terry Malloy in the radio dramas On the Waterfront, Frozen, and Grapes of Wrath.

Donovan returned to Amesbury High School in 2009 to participate in a career day mentorship program with other successful professionals and to present the school with a $100,000 arts scholarship program. Donovan has been an active supporter of Life Rolls On (LRO), a foundation dedicated to empowering people with spinal cord injuries. On October 4, 2009, he was one of the chairmen for the 6th Annual LRO annual fundraiser called Night by the Ocean, which was held at the Kodak Theatre. Donovan also contributes to the charitable efforts of his friends. Donovan auctioned off a “Burn Notice walk-on-part” plus a kiss in September 2009, while assisting Michael Bolton at the 17th Annual Benefit Concert for Women and Children at Risk in Stamford, Connecticut.
