Johnson was the National Director of the NAACP’s Youth and College Division and Vice President of the Hip Hop Summit Action Network. Johnson’s participation in these organizations aroused the eye of BET, who thought he could apply his understanding of cultural and political matters on their show Rap City. He appeared on the show for two seasons, as Cousin Jeff. He also appeared in the show The Jeff Johnson Chronicles. In August 2008, he hosted The Truth With Jeff Johnson, a weekly news program. Johnson has given public speeches in churches, universities, and local communities across the United States.

Johnson was the sole American journalist that interviewed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state and Liberia’s first elected female president. Johnson was one of only two journalists to interview Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, who had not granted interviews to American media outlets in thirteen years.

Johnson interviewed President Barack Obama, Senator Hillary Clinton, and Minister Louis Farrakhan. In 2007, he testified before the United States House Committee on Homeland Security about recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina (2005). Johnson has contributed social and political commentary to CNN.com, The Root.com, and Black Politics on the Web.com. Johnson has been quoted in Newsweek and The Boston Globe. Johnson currently provides insight and analysis on matters concerning race and politics,  popular culture and socio-economics for MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, XM radio, Sirius Satellite Radio, BET and The Dr. Phil Show.

Johnson recently made an appearance at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, GA. Johnson also served as the Detroit host for the 2013 AT&T 28 Days series. Johnson joined Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity on December 4, 2016, its 110th anniversary.
