He has received multiple honors for his efforts in print, broadcast, and video journalism. He has received the Asian American Journalists Association’s National Journalism Award several times: in 2013 for his report on the science behind the knuckleball, in 1993 for his humorous report on a family of food industry executives, and in 1997 with an honorable mention for his special report on the Asian American campaign financing scandal. He also received the AAJA’s ELP Outstanding Leadership Award in 2004. In 2007, the show he hosted, Reuters Technology Week, received a Webby Award. In 1997, the Asian American Journalists Association recognized him with an honorable mention for his special report on the Asian American political finance crisis.

Moneyline received a Maxwell Media Award in April 2000, and Katayama’s story on broadband technology was acknowledged. In the spring of 2016, he, Senator Daniel Inouye, and U.S.-Japan Council president Irene Hirano were highlighted in the Japanese Overseas Migration Museum’s exhibition on successful people from Japan’s Fukuoka prefecture. Katayama was one of five writers, including former Senate Majority Leader and US Ambassador Mike Mansfield, who wrote the book, Japan: A Living Portrait, released in 1994.
