Coopwood went on to teach, coach, and speak in speech and debate at numerous high schools and colleges around the country, including Harvard, Northwestern, Georgetown, Marquette, and Emory University.

His pupils won multiple regional, state, and national championships in speech and debate at both the high school and college levels during his coaching tenure, and he was selected National Coach of the Year twice. When he returned to Chicago, he was the Emmy-nominated original host of the $100,000 Fortune Hunt and Know Your Heritage, both nationally syndicated television game programs that predominantly aired on Chicago television station and cable superstation WGN-TV. After relocating to Los Angeles, he attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied broadcast journalism and television production. For several years, he was a regular host of pledge campaigns for KCET, a PBS member station in Los Angeles.

His work has encompassed theatre, television, cinema, commercials, and broadcasting, as well as extensive voice-over work in television and feature films. He is a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and an Emmy nominee for his voice-over work. Coopwood is one of the rare actors who has worked on both the Star Wars and Star Trek series. His most well-known voiceover job was as the Borg in the film Star Trek: First Contact. His voice was used for the Borg speech in the film, which ended with the now-iconic sentence, “Resistance is futile.” To get the distinct “Borg” appearance, his performance was digitally blended from numerous original takes.
