He began leading these bird walks eight months later. He also worked as an education instructor at Zoo Atlanta. He worked for the National Audubon Society as a community relations and outreach coordinator until January 2020. Ward created the #TrickyBirdID bird identification game on Twitter. He tweets pictures of birds, and participants must guess which species they are. He explains how to identify the bird after the reveal.

Through this Twitter game, he drew the attention of Anna Holmes, an editorial director at Topic.com As a result, Topic produced the series Birds of North America, the first episode of which was released on March 17, 2019. Ward’s brother, Jeffrey, who is also a birder, appears frequently on the show. The documentary series aims to reach people who might not normally participate in conservation efforts or learn about natural history, such as young people, people of color, and city dwellers. Ward also hopes to promote birding as a therapeutic activity for city dwellers. In May 2020, Ward and other naturalists and science communicators founded the BlackAFinSTEM collective and participated in Black Birders Week— a series of online events to celebrate black scientists, scholars, and naturalists.
