Samenow earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental science with a concentration in atmospheric science from the University of Virginia in 1998. From 2000 through September 2010, Samenow worked as a climate change analyst at the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Change Division. Samenow established and administered the EPA’s public climate change webpage. Samenow launched CapitalWeather.com, the Internet’s first professional weather blog, in early 2004. Samenow began as the blog’s sole author, but by 2009, it had grown to include over a dozen contributors. The Washington Post bought the site in 2008, and the writers became the “Capital Weather Gang” (of which Samenow is the leader), and Samenow became the Post’s weather editor and chief meteorologist. During the so-called “Snowmageddon” (the February 5-6, 2010 North American blizzard), the Capital Weather Gang received a rise in popular interest.

Samenow and the Capital Weather Gang routinely write about climate science in the Washington Post, in addition to ordinary weather patterns. Aside from his work for the Post, Samenow (and other Capital Weather Gang reporters) can be heard on WAMU (88.5 FM) for weather radio broadcasts. Samenow and the BBC World Service Trust were selected as 2010 “Climate Change Communicators of the Year” by George Mason University’s Centre for Climate Change Communication (4C). Samenow’s work at the EPA was cited by the Centre. Samenow was the chairman of the American Meteorological Society’s D.C. Chapter. He is a National Weather Association “Digital Seal of Approval” recipient. He is a Weather and Society Integrated Studies project fellow.
