Lively has largely retired from acting since the 1990s. Lively began his career at the age of ten, playing in the pilot episode of The Dukes of Hazzard. His first film appearance came four years later, in the 1983 picture Brainstorm.

That same year, he made another appearance in The Dukes of Hazzard. His most memorable roles came later, when he played Rusty Griswald in National Lampoon’s European Vacation and Chris in Night of the Creeps. Following that, he acted in the films Ghost Chase and Max Force. In 1993, he appeared in the video game Return to Zork alongside his sisters Robyn and Lori Lively. Lively previously worked for a computer company and was the owner and operator of Jimmy Crack Corn, a mobile roasted corn business.
