According to Durie, even his grandmother felt at ease watching the performances by Manpower Australia, despite the fact that they were seen as putting the risque in danger. The timing was perfect because, as he says, “There needed to be the societal change” because “the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s in Australia were quite chauvinistic and the female form was overexploited.” Durie, who left school early and retired from Manpower Australia at age 26, made up for it by finishing a four-year study in horticulture and landscape design.

Jamie Drury Outdoor Room

Durie served as the host of the Australian lifestyle show The Outdoor Room in 2008, which aired on Seven Network with replays on 7Two. The idea of the program was to “bring the world to your very own garden,” according to Durie.

After the Seven Network’s The Outdoor Room show came to an end in 2010, Durie moved the concept to the HGTV network as The Outdoor Room with Jamie Durie. Durie assembled a new team of designers, horticulturists, and contractors because he was unable to bring his own Australian design team with him. Durie transforms deserted yards in Southern California with design ideas drawn from foreign gardens and landscapes in his HGTV series. The Outdoor Room with Jamie Durie, which was primarily filmed in and around Los Angeles, creates cozy, livable spaces for formerly non-gardeners using sustainable concepts like low-water plantings and reused hardscape.
