He previously worked as a managing editor at the Atlantic Council, a defence contractor for the Defence Information Systems Agency (DISA), Managing Editor of Strategic Insights, the professional journal of the Naval Postgraduate School’s Centre for Contemporary Conflict, acquisitions editor for international affairs at Brassey’s, Inc., a Dulles, Virginia book publisher (later called Potomac Books), and a political science professor at Troy State University, Bainbridge Cove. Joyner served in the United States Army from 1988 to 1992 and is a Desert Storm combat veteran. The Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, and several military medals and ribbons were bestowed upon him. He has completed the Airborne and Air Assault schools.
