He began performing at the age of eight, first in school theatre and later in short films. In 2015, he appeared briefly in the documentary series American Genius. In 2017, Champion scheduled a screen test to join the cast of James Cameron’s science fiction film Avatar: The Way of Water. Before being cast in the role, he had a minor role in the superhero picture Avengers: Endgame (2019). He has played a lead part in the horror thriller The Night Sitter (2018). Champion booked his role in Avatar at the age of twelve, following four months of intense auditions. He was cast as Spider, a human teenager who lives among the Na’vis on Pandora.
His work included two years of soundstage performance capture and two and a half years of live-action filming in New Zealand. To maintain a muscular body throughout production, given his character appears shirtless throughout, he worked out with a personal trainer and ate a high-protein diet. He also learned freediving and scuba diving for scenes shot underwater. After five years in production, the film was released in 2022, when Champion turned 18. It grossed more than $2 billion globally, making it the third highest-grossing picture of all time. Champion shot portions of Avatar 4, which will be released in 2029, as well as the sequel, Avatar 3, which will be released in 2025.
Champion played Ethan Landry in the slasher film Scream VI, which included an ensemble cast. He characterized filming Scream VI as a “really fun summer vacation” in contrast to his time working on Avatar. He then played the son of star Liam Neeson’s character in the action thriller Retribution, which is a remake of the same-titled 2015 Spanish film. Champion then appeared with an ensemble cast in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s 1980s-set action movie Freaky Tales, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
