Palance, then 19, enrolled in a three-year acting program in London. Prior to appearing onscreen, Palance worked in theatre in England, commencing in 1971, in performances at the Oxford Playhouse and the West End of London. For the remainder of the decade, she worked largely in England. Palance auditioned for the role of Lois Lane alongside Christopher Reeve in Superman (1978). The testing comprised scenes from Superman’s balcony interview and Superman 2 (1980), in which Reeve played Clark Kent; this footage was presented to the public as an extra feature on a special edition DVD version of the picture in the early 2000s.

Palance is most known for her performance as an unlucky young nanny in The Omen (1976), with Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. Palance returned to the United States in 1979, after spending eight years working in England.[ Palance made her Broadway debut in November 1979 as Allison St. James in Bernard Slade’s Romantic Comedy. The musical was staged at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, the same venue where both of her parents understudied in the original Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire three decades before. Palance and her father co-hosted the television version of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for two seasons in 1983 and 1984, replacing Jack’s previous co-host, Catherine Shirriff; Holly was eventually replaced as a co-host by singer Marie Osmond.

Palance’s final theatrical picture was the comedy The Best of Times (1986), in which she co-starred with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. Before formally retiring from acting, she participated in the 1989 television film Cast the First Stone. Palance left acting to become a journalist, first as the editor-in-chief of the Santa Barbara Magazine and later as the editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Times’ lifestyle magazine.
