Gaston first joined KTRK-TV, ABC13 in the autumn of 1992 to co-anchor the newly enlarged and later top-rated 13 Eyewitness News at 6 a.m. She remained an anchor/reporter until 1999, when she left the station to work for MSNBC in New York. In June 2001, she returned to ABC13 as a reporter and co-anchor, but this time for Eyewitness News at 6 p.m. and Eyewitness News at 10 p.m. Gina covered the O.J. Simpson trial in Los Angeles, the Rockets championships, and the Democratic National Convention while working for 13 Eyewitness News.

Gina worked as a network journalist for MSNBC, where she covered the 2000 presidential election from coast to coast, including the Florida ballot recounts. She also covered President George W. Bush’s Inauguration, Elian Gonzales’ departure to Cuba, the United States bombing in the Iraqi no-fly zone, the Mideast conflict, and the South American earthquake. She also filled in as an anchor for NBC’s Weekend Today show.

She returned to Channel 13 in 2001 to anchor and report the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts, succeeding long-time anchor Shara Fryer. She had worked at WTSP in Tampa, Florida, WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and KLTV in Tyler, Texas, before joining KTRK-TV.
