Stanton worked as the Public Broadcasting Service’s national publicity coordinator in the New York office until 1991. In 1992, she began her career as an assistant to writer-producer George Zaloom on the film Encino Man, and she later appeared in the 1998 film Free Enterprise in a minor role as the character “Gabrielle,” alongside her then-husband and writing partner Harry Werksman. She also contributed to the film Edward Scissorhands. She first appeared on television in 1998. Her first employment was on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and she went on to write for V.I.P. and the science fiction programs Earth: Final Conflict, Farscape, and others.
She was also a co-producer. She authored the teleplay for the made-for-TV film Deathlands before being hired as a writer and producer for Grey’s Anatomy, where she made her debut with the 2005 episodes “Who’s Zoomin’ Who?” and “Much Too Much.”Stanton also contributed to the CBS television series Moonlight, where she wrote three episodes and served as co-executive producer before becoming executive producer. After Castle was canceled in May 2008, she worked as a co-executive producer on ABC’s Castle and subsequently as a consulting producer on The CW’s The Vampire Diaries. Stanton worked as a co-executive producer on ABC’s The Gates. In 2007, she left Grey’s Anatomy to write the episode “Petra-Gate” for the dramedy series Ugly Betty.
She was the showrunner for the five-season Syfy series Haven. She then joined The CW superhero program The Flash’s writing team, where she also worked as consulting producer for the final five episodes of the first season. She co-wrote the season finale teleplay “Fast Enough” with showrunner Andrew Kreisberg. It is now in its sophomore year. Stanton was upgraded to co-showrunner/executive producer, co-writing the teleplay for the premiere, “The Man Who Saved Central City” with Kreisberg. She then collaborated with narrative editor Brooke Eikmeier on the key sixth episode, “Enter Zoom.” Stanton left the series at the end of 2015 for unspecified reasons. Prior to joining Flash, Stanton wrote “Trust But Verify,” a first-season episode of its parent series Arrow.
