Huffman was born in Bedford, New York, into a rich family. Her parents divorced a year after she was born, thus she was raised by both parents. Huffman realized that her biological father was Roger Tallman Maher, a family friend. She has six sisters and one brother. In the 1970s, her mother relocated to Snowmass, Colorado, where she grew up.

Her great-grandfathers were Joseph Warren King, the creator of the King Mills Powder Company, Frederick Berthold Ewing, and Gershom Moore Peters, the founder of the Peters Cartridge Company. Huffman’s ancestry includes German, English, Scottish, French-Canadian, and Irish. Huffman graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan in 1981 after attending The Putney School, a prestigious residential high school in Putney, Vermont. She studied at the London, England’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Circle in the Square Theatre School, and New York University.

Get Shorty

She appeared as Clara Dillard, a mothering, high-level special agent for the FBI in the American comedy-drama television series Get Shorty. Get Shorty follows Miles Daly, a muscle for a ruthless crime group in Nevada. For the sake of his daughter, he tries to switch careers and become a movie producer, laundering money through a Hollywood film. But, rather than leaving the criminal world behind, he unintentionally brings it with him to Los Angeles. Daly eventually works with Rick Moreweather, a failed producer of low-quality films who becomes Miles’ partner and guide through the jungle of Hollywood.

Her most well-known role is that of Lynette Scavo in the ABC comedy-drama Desperate Housewives, where she costarred with Marcia Cross, Dana Delany, Andrea Bowen, Cody Kasch, Brenda Strong, and Richard Burgi. For this role, she won three Screen Actors Guild Awards, three consecutive Golden Globe nominations, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the show’s first season. Alongside Josh Charles, Sabrina Lloyd, and Joshua Malina on Sports Night, she also starred as Dana Whitaker in the TV anthology series American Crime, which costarred Richard Cabral, Elvis Nolasco, and Lili Taylor.

She and William H. Macy are wed. On March 12, 2019, Huffman was arrested and charged with her role in a countrywide college entrance exam cheating scandal. She pled guilty to federal charges on May 13, and was sentenced to 14 days in prison. Diane Perkins, a psychologically damaged woman, was raped by doctor Alex Merrit. Elizabeth Olivet, a mental patient, went to see Merritt for an evaluation when he was unavailable. Olivet did not do additional community study after discovering that Merritt was a pathological sexual sadist. When Olivet discovered Perkins had been raped, she made an appointment with Merritt to conduct her own inquiry.

However, the jury’s guilty judgment was overturned owing to victim blaming and the revelation that Perkins was Olivet’s patient. Miriam Gregg, a drug addict nurse, was arrested and testified about Perkins’ rape. Merritt’s fate was sealed when he rejected all claims after posting bail, prompting 54 additional women to denounce his rapes, molestations, and sexual violence, resulting in a life without parole plea deal.
