Fang Bin whistleblowing Arrest

Fang and two other citizen journalists and whistleblowers, Chen Qiushi and Li Zehua, were arrested and disappeared in Wuhan in February 2020. Chen, a lawyer who arrived in Wuhan on January 23, was the first to vanish on February 6; a week before, he had uploaded a video criticizing the Chinese government’s information manipulation, which ended with the sentence “I have no fear of dying! Do you think I’m afraid of the communists? “.. Another citizen journalist, Li, disappeared in late February but reappeared in April with a neutral, patriotic video, in stark contrast to his previous tone.

On February 4, two days before Chen’s arrest, the police came to Fang’s apartment twice. He took notes and refused to let them in without a warrant, fearful that they had arrived in large numbers to arrest him (he counted at least four officers). During the days that followed, Fang continued to make videos from his apartment, criticizing the government’s propaganda and its decision to detain Chen and Li Wenliang. On February 9, he released his final video, a 12-second clip of a piece of paper with the phrase “resist all citizens, hand the government power back to the people” written on it. Since then, he has been missing. Radio Free Asia reported in February 2022 that Fang was being held at the Wuhan Jiang’an District Police Station.

Fang Bin Journalism Career

On January 25, 2020, Fang shot his first video. His photos, which mostly show him and the situation in various Wuhan districts, have received a few thousand views. To get around the government’s censorship on domestic platforms, videos were uploaded to YouTube. While China blocks direct access to foreign platforms such as YouTube, they may still be accessed through virtual private networks.
