They first performed background checks with Kids Management, and then her mother signed them up with an agent. Her breakthrough performance was as Annie Pearson in the 2016 television series This Is Us. Before landing the role of Annie, she memorized the lines for both Annie and her sister Tess, without knowing for which one she was auditioning. After the popularity of This Is Us, Herman appeared in a Subaru commercial in 2018. She received her first significant cinematic role in Shazam!, releasing in 2019. She reprised her role in the sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023). Herman won two Screen Actors Guild Awards in the same category for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for her work on This Is Us, in 2018 and 2019.
