Williams worked at various technology jobs and start-up firms in Key West, Florida, as well as Dallas and Austin, Texas, before returning to his family farm in Nebraska. Williams relocated to Sebastopol, California in Sonoma County in 1996 to work for the technology publishing firm O’Reilly Media. He began his career at O’Reilly in marketing before becoming an independent contractor writing computer code, which led to freelance opportunities with companies such as Intel and Hewlett-Packard. While working at O’Reilly, he also launched EvHead.com, where he first began blogging about his personal thoughts. Williams stepped down as CEO in October 2010, explaining that he would be “completely focused on product strategy,” and appointed Dick Costolo as his replacement. Williams resigned from Twitter’s board of directors in February 2019. Williams founded the publishing platform Medium on September 25, 2012. It was initially only available to early adopters, but it was made available to the general public in 2013. On April 5, 2013, Williams and Stone announced the dissolution of Obvious Corporation in order to focus on individual startups. Williams announced on July 12, 2022, that he would step down as Medium’s CEO and become chairman of the board.
Williams, along with James Joaquin and Vishal Vasishth, co-founded the venture capital firm Obvious Ventures in 2014. The firm focuses on businesses that they believe can make a positive difference in the world. Since its inception, the fund has raised approximately $585 million, including $123 million in its first round, $191 million in its second round, and $271 million in its most recent round.
