She attended UCLA production classes in 1994 to prepare for the production of Desperado. She was the co-founder and vice president of Troublemaker Studios, which she and her ex-husband, Robert Rodriguez, formed in 2000. Avellán also served as the executive producer of In and Out of Focus, a documentary about combining parenting and a career in film. In September 2019, she acquired the remake rights to The Whistler in order to launch an English-language franchise through her production firm, Eya Productions.
