She is the daughter of Anne Brewster (née Wells) and James William Shue, who was president of the International Food and Beverage Corporation and a former congressional candidate, lawyer, and real estate developer. Her mother worked as a vice president in the Chemical Bank Corporation’s private banking division.

She was raised in South Orange, New Jersey. Her parents divorced when she was nine years old. Shue’s mother is a descendant of Pilgrim leader William Brewster, and her father’s family immigrated to Pennsylvania from Germany in the early 1800s. Shue grew up with and was very close to her three brothers (William, Andrew, and John). Andrew, her younger brother, is an actor best known for his role as Billy Campbell in the Fox sitcom Melrose Place. Shue graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, in 1981, and in 1994, she and Andrew were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. Jenna and Harvey Shue are her half-siblings from her father’s remarriage.
