Edward P. Jones Career

A collection of short stories on the African-American working class in Washington, D.C. in the 20th century can be found in his debut book, Lost in the City (1992). Some of the characters in the early stories are similar to first-generation immigrants since they are from the rural South and arrived in the city during the Great Migration. The protagonist of his second book, The Known World, was a Black planter and slave owner who lived in a made-up Virginia county. It was awarded the 2005 International Dublin Literary Award as well as the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. All Aunt Hagar’s Children, Jones’s third book, was released in 2006. It’s an anthology of short stories, primarily set in Washington, D.C., featuring African Americans, much to Lost in the City. In the spring and fall semesters of 2009, Jones was a visiting professor of creative writing at George Washington University. In fall 2010 he joined the English department faculty to teach creative writing. The stories of Jones’ first and third book are connected. As Wyatt Mason wrote in Harper’s Magazine in 2006:
