In 1983, he joined his father’s advertising agency, David Deutsch Associates. Donny was given full management of the agency by his father in 1989 (the company was renamed Deutsch Inc.). He anchored Saturday Night Politics with Deutsch on MSNBC in 2019. From 2004 to 2008, he presented the CNBC talk show The Big Idea with Deutsch. In addition to his work on The Big Idea with Donny, he is a frequent guest on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. He also served as a television judge on NBC’s reality show The Apprentice. He also appears on the Today Show on a regular basis in the “The Professionals” segment.

In April 2013, Deutsch’s prime-time CNN discussion show (Get to) The Point was terminated after only one week due to a low viewership of 268,000, according to Nielsen. On his Comedy Central show, comedian Jon Stewart attacked the show. In 2015, the USA Network announced a new television show starring Deutsch called Simply Donny!, which premiered in November of that year. The sitcom was not renewed for a second season by the USA Network in August 2016. Deutsch co-hosted Bloomberg Television’s With All Due Respect with Mark Halperin and John Heilemann in 2016. In May 2019, it was reported that Deutsch would host his own show, Saturday Night Politics with Deutsch, on MSNBC, taking over the network’s vacant 8 p.m. Saturday time slot.

The show premiered on Saturday, May 4, 2019, and had a slow start in terms of ratings. The show averaged only 74,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic in its first eight weeks. After 13 episodes, the show ended on August 13, 2019. Deutsch responded to the show’s cancellation on Twitter, saying, “I’m beyond grateful for all of your help in making it @MSNBC’s highest-rated Saturday night program EVER!” Deutsch referred to Tucker Carlson as a ratings whore during a discussion with Nicolle Wallace on MSNBC on January 25, 2022, about the possibility of US engagement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
