Rains began his acting career in 2003 when he starred in the well-known TV movie Saving Jessica Lynch. He later appeared in the popular TV movie Flight 93 in 2006. Rains starred as Dr. Leo Julian in SOAPnet’s General Hospital: Night Shift, a 13-episode prime-time spin-off of the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital, from July 12 to October 4, 2007. On July 2, 2007, the character was first introduced to General Hospital. Because Rains was unable to appear in the series’ second season in July 2008, his brother Ethan was cast in the role beginning July 22, 2008. After leaving General Hospital, he went on to appear in a number of television shows, including 24, Flash Forward, Burn Notice, NCIS, Cane, and Anger Management.

In 2010, he was recognized for his performance in the controversial independent film The Taqwacores, which was based on a 2004 novel by an American convert to Islam, Michael Muhammad Knight. The New York Times lauded him for his performance as “His performance is “reminiscent of Adrien Brody’s career-launching turn in Summer of Sam,” according to NBC. Rains are simply operating at a much higher level as the film’s heart and soul.”  This role also earned him the best actor award at the international film festival Festival de Cine Internacional de Ourense. Later that year, he began filming and starring in Exxodus Pictures’ supernatural thriller Jinn. In April 2014, the film was released in theaters across the country.

He portrayed Shawn Walker, a young Detroit automotive designer who discovers an ancient secret that threatens to destroy his entire family. Rains played Saeed in A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, a Sundance Film Festival favorite horror film. After receiving high praise from many critics upon its initial release, it was acquired by Kino Lorber for mainstream US distribution and released in late 2014. “At its premiere, this stunning and stinging cinematic marvel left us speechless,” wrote founder Richard Lorber. In 2014, Rains co-wrote and directed the short film Still Here with Shohreh Aghdashloo and Alan Rosenberg, which was inspired by the real-life events of their cousin, who was misdiagnosed with cancer.

Rains debuted in the fifth season of the NBC medical drama Chicago Med as Dr. Crockett Marcel, a new trauma surgeon at the hospital.
