Monk rose to prominence in the theater as one of the co-writers and co-stars of the 1982 musical Pump Boys and Dinettes. For her portrayal in Redwood Curtain (1993), she received the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She received Tony nominations for her roles in Picnic (1994), Steel Pier (1997), and Curtains (2007). For The Time of the Cuckoo, she received an Obie Award in 2000. In September 2016, she returned to the stage in Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s production of David Rabe’s Visiting Edna.[6]Monk had an appearance on the Food Network culinary show Barefoot Contessa, where she made Roasted Chicken, Arugula and Bread Salad, and Tri-Berry Crumble.

Since the early 1990s, Monk has appeared in over 30 films. She made her film debut as Aunt Dorothy in the film adaptation of Prelude to a Kiss. Later in her career, she appeared in The Bridges of Madison County (1995) and The Devil’s Advocate (1997). She received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her recurring role as Katie Sipowicz in the ABC series NYPD Blue. She has also appeared as a guest star on Law & Order, Desperate Housewives, The Closer, and Girls. Monk appeared on Grey’s Anatomy (2006-11), A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2001-02), and Damages (2007-12).
