Turner finished first runner-up at the Miss Arkansas Pageant in 1988, which served as a state preliminary competition for the Miss America program. She won Miss Missouri in the summer of 1989 and went on to win Miss America in 1990. Turner is a singer, pianist, and skilled percussionist, as evidenced by her marimba rendition of ‘”Flight of the Bumblebee”‘ in the Miss America talent competition in 1990. Turner was the third African-American national titleholder and the first — and still the only — Miss Missouri to be crowned Miss America in 2019.

Six years later, Turner joined CBS News as a feature correspondent before being promoted to “resident veterinarian” and fill-in anchor. Turner also worked as a fill-in anchor for CBS Morning News. Turner departed CBS in 2012. She has appeared on the Animal Planet shows Cats 101 and Dogs 101. She was the Arise America host on Arise News.
