David Hoffman career
In 1977, he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the Capitol Hill News Service. He covered Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign as a member of the San Jose Mercury News’ Washington bureau. He joined The Washington Post in May 1982 to cover the Reagan White House. He also covered George H. W. Bush’s first two years in office. Three national journalistic prizes were bestowed upon him for his coverage of the White House. In 1992, he became The Washington Post’s Jerusalem bureau chief after reporting on the State Department. He spent six years in Moscow after studying Russian at Oxford University. He was Moscow bureau head from 1995 to 2001, then foreign editor and assistant managing editor for foreign news.
The Oligarchs: Wealth and Power in the New Russia, Hoffman’s debut book, was released by PublicAffairs in 2002. In 2010, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for his second book, The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and its Dangerous Legacy (Doubleday, 2009). The winner of the Nobel Prize called it “a well documented narrative that examines the terrifying doomsday competition between two superpowers and how weapons of mass destruction still imperil humankind.” Hoffman wrote The Billion Dollar Spy: A True Story of Cold War Espionage and Betrayal in 2015, based on the story of Adolf Tolkachev, who was captured and executed for handing the CIA sensitive information.
