He presently anchors and hosts documentary shows on PBS and History. From 1975 through 1987, Hartman was the inaugural host of ABC’s Good Morning America. As an actor, he appeared in the 1970s on The Bold Ones: The New Doctors as a young resident, Dr. Paul Hunter, and as a teacher in the sitcom Lucas Tanner. He appeared in the Miracle on 34th Street TV movie version in 1973. Following graduation, he served three years on active service as an officer in the United States Air Force’s Strategic Air Command. He worked as a supply officer at Dow AFB in Bangor, Maine, and appeared in local productions, including Oklahoma!, as Curly.
Hartman debuted on Broadway in two productions: the original Hello, Dolly! in 1964 and The Yearling in 1965. He refocused on television after appearing in films such as the Doris Day comedy The Ballad of Josie (1967), Nobody’s Perfect (1968), and Did You Hear the One About the Traveling Saleslady? (1968) starring Phyllis Diller. In 1969, he appeared in The Virginian and gained fame as a dedicated doctor on The Bold Ones: The New Doctors, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. Hartman co-starred with Hal Linden in the industrial musical Diesel Dazzle (1966). Hartman also played David Sutton in more than two dozen episodes of the television series The Virginian and appeared as a guest performer on several other popular shows.
Hartman played an unhappy pilot whose wife was kidnapped by crooks in the made-for-TV pilot film for San Francisco International. Along with Jane Alexander and Sebastian Cabot, he co-starred in Miracle on 34th Street, a TV adaptation of the holiday classic, in 1973. The next year, he played an archaeological professor in the Disney film The Island at the Top of the World. Hartman starred as a retired baseball player turned unusual high-school teacher in the 1974-75 NBC series Lucas Tanner. His acting career came to an end with the discontinuation of this series. Hartman became the first male co-host of ABC’s revamped morning news show, Good Morning America (1975-1987), on November 3, 1975.
Hartman was the anchor and host of a documentary series on the Discovery Channel and PBS member station WNET in New York City. In North Carolina, Hartman can be heard as the host of the North Carolina Symphony radio broadcasts on North Carolina Public Radio and WCPE-FM. Hartman would win multiple Emmys and journalism prizes for his work on television documentaries. Hartman received the National Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award in 2017.
