Gallagher began acting at the age of two, first modeling for print advertorials in and around New York City before transitioning to commercial work as an actor. He appeared in numerous television ads as a toddler for brands such as Tyson Foods and Fisher Price. At the age of eight, he had a recurrent part in the soap opera Loving. His film debut came in 1993, when he was cast as Mikey Ubriacco in the film Look Who’s Talking Now, playing the son of John Travolta and Kirstie Alley, as well as the elder brother of Tabitha Lupien. He performed in the Broadway version of A Christmas Carol in 1995. He also appeared in other television films, including Bermuda Triangle.

During breaks from filming, he made a few films, including the direct-to-video Richie Rich’s Christmas Wish and Little Secrets, which starred Evan Rachel Wood. Gallagher departed 7th Heaven in 2003, during its eighth season, to attend college full-time. However, he returned to the series on a part-time basis during season 9 and what was considered to be the tenth and last season. In late 2006, The CW unexpectedly renewed the show for an eleventh season. Gallagher decided not to renew his contract. In 2005, Gallagher appeared in and co-produced a low-budget rendition of The Picture of Dorian Gray. In September 2006, his first work after leaving 7th Heaven was a guest appearance on Numb3rs as serial killer Buck Winters.

He also appears in the season 6 premiere of CSI: Miami as another suspected killer. He also starred in the horror sequel Boogeyman 2, which was released straight to DVD. Gallagher made a cameo appearance on the TNT program Saving Grace in July 2008, playing Paul Shapiro, a troubled young man who was the suspect in a murder inquiry. His second guest appearance was as Ryan Stephenson, the son of a transgender woman, in the Fox detective thriller Bones in October 2008. Then, in November 2008, he starred in an episode of CBS’s Without a Trace as Jeff Ellis, a suspect in the disappearance of a local nurse.

He played Seiji Amasawa in the English dub of Studio Ghibli’s Whisper of the Heart. Gallagher starred in the second-to-last episode of the series The Deep End, where he played a guy accused of second-degree murder despite his innocence. Gallagher was revealed in March 2012 to star in Takashi Shimizu’s Scared of the Dark, alongside Jake Weber. Gallagher has famously voiced Riku in the Kingdom Hearts computer games and franchise since 2002.
