In 1989, Chilton launched his career by self-publishing his book The Wealthy Barber. The Wealthy Barber was written in 26 months and was primarily designed to help those with minimal financial expertise create good money habits. The Wealthy Hairdresser delves into the lives of three young people who regularly seek financial advice from a neighborhood hairdresser. The Wealthy Barber is one of Canada’s best-selling books of all time, having sold over two million copies since its publication. Chilton also published many best-selling cookbooks with authors Greta and Janet Podleski, including Looneyspoons, Crazy Plates, and Eat, Shrink, and Be Merry!

Chilton quit the publishing sector in 2007, primarily due to guilt at not contributing to the industry’s advancement while pocketing a third of all profits. In reaction to the 2008 financial crisis, Chilton released The Wealthy Barber Returns, a sequel to The Wealthy Barber. The novel does not employ narrative, instead relying on his own counsel to guide readers and help them recover financially. Chilton has claimed that he is unlikely to publish another financial guidance book because the writing process was too difficult due to his professional and personal obligations.
Chilton has significantly boosted his investment and company footprint since joining the cast of Dragons’ Den, although claiming to have only spent a small percentage of his considerable assets. Chilton recently purchased a 25% stake in the card company Hand and Beak, which collaborated with greeting card publisher Hallmark to market and distribute the product to consumers.
Chilton has made multiple guest appearances throughout his career, the first of which was in 2010 on The Hour (George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight).
