The series is set in Washington, D.C., at the Capitol, where alien bugs infect members of Congress. Laurel Healy, a documentary filmmaker, agrees to work for her brother, Democratic Senator Luke Healy, in order to secure funding for her next film.
She discovers, however, a conspiracy in which alien bugs have partially replaced the brains of several people, including members of Congress. The bugs can sometimes cause their victims’ heads to explode. The Cars’ song “You Might Think” is frequently used as a leitmotif in the series for characters who are infected by the aliens.

They began an affair but quickly fell out over Hathaway’s willingness to bend the rules to protect pedophiles. Scotty blamed Alex for Will Jeffries’ attempted murder, which ended their relationship. He then expressed interest in Frankie Rafferty, a young lab technician, but soon discovered she was married. After Will’s death, Frankie consoled Scotty, and the two apparently slept together.
