His earliest and most well-known part is Danny Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980). He was chosen for the job because he can concentrate for long periods of time. According to Garrett Brown and John Baxter’s DVD commentary, Kubrick was able to film all of Lloyd’s parts without the six-year-old actor realizing he was in a horror picture. He was encouraged to believe he was simply performing in a drama film about a family living in a motel.
Vivian Kubrick, Kubrick’s daughter, filmed an interview with Lloyd for Making The Shining (1980). Despite his well-received performance in The Shining, Lloyd resigned from acting at the age of 10, following his portrayal of young G. Gordon Liddy in the 1982 television film Will: G. Gordon Liddy. Lloyd’s first acting job in 36 years came in 2019, when he appeared as a baseball game fan in the Shining sequel Doctor Sleep.
