Kim made a name for himself by appearing in a variety of television shows. He appeared as a treasury agent in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, as well as episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, Charmed, The Shield, Seinfeld, NYPD Blue, and ER. He had recurring roles on Angel and 24 and was a regular on the short-lived Babylon 5 spin-off Crusade. He also played Dr. Tsi Chou in a 2008 miniseries based on Michael Crichton’s acclaimed novel The Andromeda Strain. Kim’s film credits include a Shaolin monk in American Shaolin (1992), which allowed him to demonstrate his Tae Kwon Do skills. Then came a brief appearance as a scientist in Doctor Octavius’ laboratory in Spider-Man 2 (2004).
Kim made his directorial debut with the Hawaii Five-0 season five episode “Kuka’awale” in addition to acting. Due to a salary dispute with CBS, he left the show in late June 2017, prior to the eighth season. Kim appeared as Jack Kang, the leader of the Candor faction, in The Divergent Series: Insurgent, the sequel to 2014’s Divergent. Kim, the founder of the film and television production company 3AD, signed a first-look development deal with CBS Television Studios in January 2014, the first of its kind for an Asian-American actor. The ABC television series The Good Doctor, based on the 2013 South Korean series of the same name, is currently being produced by 3AD. On The Good Doctor, he serves as an executive producer.
Kim played Ben Daimio in the reboot film Hellboy in 2019. To avoid a whitewashing controversy, he replaced Ed Skrein in the role, as the character was Asian-American in the original comics. Kim voices Chief Benja in the upcoming Disney animated film Raya and the Last Dragon, which will be released in March 2021. Kim is the voice of Johnny Gat in the Saints Row video game series. In the final two episodes of Justice League Unlimited, he voiced Metron. Kim appeared in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, from June 12 to June 28, 2009.
