Dana Tyler Career
Tyler began her media career as an intern at Columbus’ WBNS-TV Channel 10 before being promoted to a reporter in 1981. In 1987, the station purchased its first satellite truck, and Tyler and co-host Dave Kaylor started Heart of Ohio, a statewide show. Tyler went on to win an Emmy for her performance on the show and became a co-anchor of the station’s evening newscasts by 1986. Tyler subsequently relocated to New York, where he began working as a weekend anchor and reporter for WCBS-TV in June 1990. She was part of the first African-American newscast anchoring tandem in the New York market, along with Reggie Harris.
In 1993, she immediately advanced to the 5:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. newscasts. Tyler has worked with some of New York City’s most well-known television news anchors, including Jim Jensen, Brian Williams, Ernie Anastos, John Johnson, Michele Marsh, Ira Joe Fisher, and Roz Abrams, at WCBS-TV. Stephen Clark, Don Dahler, and Chris Wragge were among her collaborators. Tyler continued in her position despite a substantial staff cut in November 1996, when several on-air personalities were sacked, including Marsh, Johnson, and Harris.
Tyler returned to WCBS’s 11 p.m. newscast on April 17, 2006, in addition to her 6 p.m. duties, both alongside Jim Rosenfield, as part of a shakeup in anchors where no one remained in their previous roles. She took over for longtime WABC-TV anchor Roz Abrams, who had succeeded her a few years before (Abrams moved to the noon and 5 p.m. newscasts but is no longer with the station), only to be replaced by Kristine Johnson in 2007.
