In 1984, she entered Miss LA Chinatown on assignment for Pacific Ties, but she won the pageant and went on to win Miss Chinatown USA the following year. In 1988, she won the Spokesmodel competition on Star Search. She came in third place in the More Magazine/Wilhelmina 40+Model Search. She worked as a spokesperson for L’Oréal. In the films Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, China Beach, and Matlock, she played Romulan Ambassador Caithlin Dar. Gouw has worked as a reporter and/or news anchor for KTVU, E!, Channel 26, Continental Cablevision, KXTV,  KDFW, CBS, KERO-TV, KABC-TV, and NPR San Francisco during her career. She was previously a Pacific Time  reporter and KDFW’s first Asian-American news anchor.

She earned a Regional Emmy in 1996 for her feature Is Your Child in a Gang? while working for Channel 10 in Sacramento. The next year, she and photographer Mike Garza received another Oscar for their work on The Promised Land, a documentary about illegal immigration. In 1998, she received her third Emmy in the category of current affairs programming for Hong Kong: The California Connection. She has also received four Society of Professional Journalism Awards and a nomination for “Best TV Talk Show Series in the State” from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters. Gouw hosted Asian Outlook, a half-hour talk show focused on Pacific Rim affairs for WYBE in Philadelphia.
