He began his career as a performer in various shows at Paramount Kings Dominion. He was cast in a touring production of the revue Smokey Joe’s Cafe as well as a tour of Saturday Night Fever while living in California. Following this run, he traveled to New York City to audition for various shows. He was initially cast in the ensemble of Hairspray but was offered the role of Seaweed after three readings. He was nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for this role, both for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical. Prior to his role in The Closer, Reynolds appeared in Without a Trace and The Guardian. Reynolds used his previous experience in security and law enforcement to research this role. Reynolds has appeared in films such as The Terminal, Red Tails, and Straight Outta Compton. He plays Sheriff Mike Thompson in the SyFy comedy-drama Resident Alien.
