Poole founded 4chan on October 1, 2003, using 2chan’s translated source code, with the goal of combining the anime culture on 2chan with the community on Something Awful. Poole was voted the most influential person in 2008 by an open Internet poll conducted by Time in April 2009, with 16,794,368 votes, beating out Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, and Oprah Winfrey. It was soon discovered that users of the /b/ board had rigged the poll results in Poole’s favor. To accomplish this, several tools were created, including a website that could vote for Poole at a rate of about 100 votes per minute and a program that could vote for him at a rate of 300 votes per minute.
Poole was reported to have raised $625,000 in 2010 to launch Canvas, a new online enterprise. Marc Andreessen and Joshua Schachter were among the site’s investors. Canvas went live in beta on January 31, 2011, and featured digitally altered images created by site users. Users were required to identify themselves using Facebook Connect, as opposed to 4chan. On February 8, 2013, a similar app called DrawQuest was released. Poole announced on January 21, 2014, that Canvas and DrawQuest would be shutting down immediately. Poole resigned as 4chan’s head administrator on January 21, 2015. He held his final 4chan Q&A two days later.
