Noth was the eldest son of news reporter Jeanne Parr and Charles James Noth. His father was a naval aviator and insurance agent, while his mother was of Irish descent from Knockbride in County Cavan. Charles was born into an affluent Chicago family, and his mother was of Irish origin. He had a history of misbehavior, including graffiti and marijuana use. Following his father’s death in 1966, Noth relocated to California before returning to New York in the early 1970s.
He began taking LSD at the age of 15, and after graduating from Storm King School, he went on to The Barlow School in New York, where poet-dissenter Peter Kane Dufault taught American history.
