Cheche Lazaro Career

Lázaro began her career as an ABS-CBN reporter. She was the director and manager of the network’s Public Affairs section from July 1986 to December 1987. As a result, she was named team leader and reporter for the network’s coverage of President Corazon C. Aquino’s tour to Singapore and Indonesia. In 1988, Lázaro left ABS-CBN to start her own production business, Probe Productions, with the support of fellow journalists Luchi Cruz-Valdez and Maria Ressa. This prompted her to create a number of documentary shows, including 5 and Up for ABC (later TV5, now The 5 Network or just 5), The Probe Team, I-Witness, and Cheche Lazaro Presents for GMA Network, which eventually became her home network.

She was able to create award-winning documentaries there, including one about the MV Doa Paz maritime accident. However, the network’s relationship with PAGCOR was strained in 2003 when GMA-7 refused to show a Probe story regarding a lifestyle check on PAGCOR Chair Efraim Genuino. The network said that the article was rushed and would unfairly harm the subject’s reputation; Lázaro perceived it as censorship. The schism was publicized, and after 16 years of strong ties with GMA-7, the network terminated Probe’s contract. Despite this setback, Lázaro returned to the spotlight in June 2004, when Probe began running again on ABC. After a year, she opted to return to her home station, ABS-CBN, in 2005.

Lázaro was also the chairperson of the broadcast department at the University of the Philippines Diliman from 1992 to 1995. She is currently a board member and advisor at the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism. Probe Profiles is Lázaro’s most recent project with the Probe Production team. Their final episode aired on July 1, 2010, and chronicled President Benigno Aquino III’s candidacy and ascent to power that year. After 8 years on Probe and 4 years on Che Che Lazaro Presents, Lázaro joined One News (owned by TV5 Network) in 2018 as a host for Convo, replacing Bloomberg TV Philippines.
