Perez was previously recognized as the host of the nationally syndicated The Charles Perez Show. Tribune Entertainment produced the show, which aired from 1994 to 1996. Following that, he co-anchored the final season of King World’s nationally syndicated news magazine show, American Journal, with his sister, Michele Dabney-Perez, replacing Nancy Glass. Perez has also worked as a reporter for KCAL-TV in Los Angeles and as a producer for The Ricki Lake Show and The Montel Williams Show.

Perez was the lead nighttime anchor for ABC affiliate WPLG in Miami. He was fired from this position on August 6, 2009, after filing a discrimination complaint against the station, citing what his attorney described as increasing public awareness of his sexual orientation, which resulted in his removal from anchoring Channel 10’s weeknight newscasts. Prior to 2006, he worked as a weekday reporter and weekend anchor at WABC-TV in New York City. He co-anchored the weekend editions of Eyewitness News at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. with Sandra Bookman.
