Riggs began acting when he was four years old. His early credits include stage productions of The Wizard of Oz, where he made his stage debut as a Munchkin, and Oklahoma with Theater of the Stars at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. He made his film debut at the age of five in the indie horror film Jesus H. Zombie. In 2009, at the age of nine, he was cast in his first two feature film roles, Get Low as Tom and The Wronged Man as seven-year-old Ryan Gregory. In the latter film, which aired on Lifetime in 2010, Riggs played Julia Ormond’s son. Riggs was cast as Carl Grimes, his biggest role to date, on the AMC horror-drama television series The Walking Dead in 2010, at the age of ten.
Riggs previously worked on The Wronged Man with the series’ executive producer Gale Anne Hurd. The series follows Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Carl’s father, and his group of family, friends, and strangers as they fight to survive in a violent post-apocalyptic world populated by zombies and the few surviving humans, some of whom are even more dangerous than the zombies themselves. The series was a ratings success, becoming the number one show on television among adults 18-49. Riggs and The Walking Dead’s other main cast members won the 2012 Satellite Award for Best Cast in a Television Series.
Riggs was nominated five times in a row for the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series, and he won it three times in 2014, 2016, and 2018. Riggs also won a Young Artist Award in 2014 for Best Performance in a TV Series – Leading Young Actor, after being nominated in 2012 and 2013. Riggs reprised his role as Carl in a special episode of Robot Chicken titled “The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special: Look Who’s Walking” in 2017, along with several of his co-stars.
Riggs appeared in the 2014 Blumhouse Productions supernatural thriller Mercy and the 2017 Voltage Pictures horror film Keep Watching. Riggs began DJing at various events across the United States in 2017 and released his first song “Hold Up” under the stage name “Eclipse” in December of that year. Inherit the Viper, a crime thriller film, cast him. In the film, which premiered in 2019, he played Cooper. In 2019, he also appeared in the science fiction thriller Only in 2019. Riggs was cast as PJ in a multi-episode arc on ABC’s freshman drama series A Million Little Things in January 2019. Riggs, whose full name was revealed to be Patrick Nelson, returned for the second season of the show.
