Chad Myers CNN Career

Myers, a native of Buffalo, New York, joined CNN in October 1999 after working at WXYZ-TV in Detroit as a morning weather commentator. He has won Peabody Awards for his contributions to coverage of the Gulf War and scientific explanations of the BP oil spill and its eventual capping in the Gulf of Mexico. He also covered the 2011 Japanese tsunami and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant meltdown.

After entering into a mock-up of the Chilean miners’ rescue capsule, he was mocked on David Letterman’s Late Show. After showing him getting into the mock-up, the show’s producers shot him into the sun. Myers had an on-air fight with anchor Carol Costello during Hurricane Katrina reporting in 2005 when she kept interrupting him during a program. “Let me explain, Carol!” he exclaimed after she addressed him by name in an attempt to get Myers to clarify some of the report’s more technical terminology.

In an on-air interview in 2010, Myers argued that climatologists only reported climate change because their careers were on the line and that “they worked for the government.” Bill Nye chastised CNN in August 2016 for employing a “climate change denier meteorologist”; nonetheless, Myers claimed that following the crossing of 400 ppm carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere in 2013, he was no longer a skeptic and has changed his mind about climate change research. “CNN Weatherman Chad Myers Hates His Job, His Life, and Everyone Around Him,” a piece on HBO’s popular satirical news show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, featured Myers. The segment consisted of clips of Myers being enraged, disgusted, or otherwise agitated while reporting for CNN. On February 22, 2015, the episode aired.
