When he was three, his parents took him to an acting seminar near his house. He continued acting till the age of twelve. Finley appeared in his first national advertisement for Shell Oil when he was three years old and lived with his family in the Dallas suburb of Garland, Texas. He also appeared in ads for Taco Bell, Shout, and Brinks Security. Finley has appeared in films such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, A Perfect World, and 8 Seconds, as well as three appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Finley won over 5,000 other boys in a countrywide search to be the title character in the 1997 film Leave It to Beaver.
He subsequently starred in Hope Floats as Travis, a depressed child who dresses up as a dozen different characters ranging from Barney the Dinosaur to Charlie Chaplin. In 1995, Finley was among the 3,000 actors that auditioned for the role of young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Finley also appeared in the 2000 Disney direct-to-video film Perfect Game, where he played Kanin, a youngster motivated by the ghost of his late father to prove that he can play baseball as well as anyone on the championship Little League team. He is a molecular biology researcher who has authored several academic research articles in his profession.
