In 2005, she traveled to the United States from Nigeria on a two-month work permit to cover a United Nations General Assembly gathering in New York City. She married a US citizen, who forbade her from having interpersonal ties with anyone other than him. He subjected her to a life of forced labor, seizing all of her earnings. She was held in her home in this manner for two years. She is a fellow of the International Institute for Journalism, Germany.
She wrote and self-published Imprisoned: The Travails of a Trafficked Victim, which details her experiences with human trafficking. In August 2013, she participated in a discussion panel following a screening of the documentary film Not My Life at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs’ Cowles Auditorium.
