From 2010 to the 2017 hurricane season, Bryan was The Weather Channel’s senior hurricane specialist. He anchored coverage of every major hurricane during that time span from the Atlanta headquarters, including substantial coverage of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Irma in 2017. After helping South Florida through Hurricane Andrew in 1992, he ascended to national notoriety. He was CBS News’ in-house hurricane analyst in New York from 1996 to 2008, and he hosted WFOR in Miami’s coverage of multiple hurricanes. He previously worked for WTVJ and on NBC News programs from New York, including “Today.”
Bryan testified before the New York City Council about the city’s danger assessments and messaging systems before to Superstorm Sandy. Following Hurricane Andrew, Bryan was named an expert advisor to Florida Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner Bill Nelson’s Academic Task Force on Hurricane Catastrophe Insurance, and he was a member of Gov. Lawton Chiles’ committee to evaluate state response and recommend changes to the state emergency management system. Bryan earned the David Brinkley Award for Communication Excellence in 1993 in recognition of his efforts prior to, during, and after Hurricane Andrew.
He has received an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Southeast Chapter, as well as the DuPont and Peabody awards, which are the greatest honors in broadcasting in the United States. Bryan’s most recent book, “My Hurricane Andrew Story,” was published in May of this year. The book also includes Bryan’s analysis of the steps that must be taken now if we are to effectively navigate the major hurricanes of the future. St. Martin’s Press published Bryan’s comprehensive storm handbook, “Hurricane Almanac,” in 2006. Among other things, the book examines hurricane science, history, and preparedness. A new edition was launched in the spring of 2007.
