Since joining the network, Hume has provided political analysis of every major political event. He most recently covered the 2020 presidential and vice-presidential debates, as well as the Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

Previously, Hume served as interim host of On the Record, which aired weekdays at 7 p.m. ET until the 2016 presidential election. He also previously hosted Special Report and served as its host for more than ten years, retiring in December 2008. Special Report was the highest-rated political program on cable television during his tenure as host.

Hume also served as the Washington managing editor, where he was in charge of overseeing news content for FOX News’ Washington bureau. From 1996 to 2008, he also hosted all of the network’s presidential election coverage. He worked for ABC News for 23 years before joining FOX News in 1996, serving as chief White House correspondent from 1989 to 1996. During his tenure, he contributed to World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Nightline, and This Week, as well as various news division specials. Hume began his career at ABC as a consultant for the network’s documentary division in 1973, and he was named a Washington correspondent in 1976.

Later, he was promoted to Capitol Hill correspondent, where he covered Congress until 1988. Previously, Hume worked as a newspaper reporter for The Hartford Times and The Baltimore Evening Sun before joining United Press International.

He has received numerous honors and awards, including the National Press Foundation’s Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism in 2003 and a 1991 Emmy Award for his coverage of the Gulf War.
