After graduation, he served as a faculty member at Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut before joining ESPN as a journalist for ESPNEWS, SportsCenter, and ESPN Radio. In 2002, he joined Hartford NBC station WVIT (owned and run by General Electric, CNBC’s parent company). In June 2007, he joined CNBC as a general assignment reporter and replacement anchor for the network’s Business Day programs. In October 2007, he co-anchored Worldwide Exchange alongside CNBC Europe’s Ross Westgate in London and CNBC Asia’s Christine Tan in Singapore. In May 2013, he resumed anchoring Way Too Early on MSNBC  and later moved to New England to work for NECN and NBC Boston.

Shactman received three regional Emmy Award nominations in 2002 for sports anchoring and reporting. A year later (2003), he won The Associated Press Award for a documentary about Geno Auriemma, the head basketball coach of the University of Connecticut. Shactman is also interested in community service, having volunteered for Junior Achievement, ALS, and the Connecticut Mentoring Program. He has also served on the Special Olympics’ Board of Directors.
