Smitrovich has appeared in several television series. His first significant TV series role was as Det. Sgt. Danny Krychek in the 1980s series Crime Story. He later starred in the hit drama series Life Goes On (1989-1993). Smitrovich played the lead in the debut episode of the 1980s crime drama smash series Miami Vice. He also appears in the season finale of NYPD Blue. He was also seen in Danny Glover’s The Henry Lee Project. Smitrovich was cast as Seattle police lieutenant Bob Bletcher in Millennium, a 1996 television series written and produced by Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files.

He is perhaps best known for his roles as Inspector Cramer on the A&E series A Nero Wolfe Mystery (based on Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe detective stories), as Assistant District Attorney Kenneth Walsh on the ABC hit series The Practise, and as Chief Alex Olcyk on Without a Trace. He played Vice President Raymond Jarvis in the NBC series The Event in 2010. Smitrovich has also played a number of military figures.
